Heads up on 289 heads
A Surrey-based seller has these stock 289 heads (1966) which have 1.78 inlets, 1.54 exhausts and 54 cc chambers with push-in studs:

Yes, take them to a decent machine shop and have them crack tested first. They should be okay.Could they be converted easily to unleaded?
Then have the hardened valve inserts installed.
If you are replacing the stock press-in studs with the screw-in type, do remember that the stud bosses need to be milled by 1/4 inch first. Then the stud holes need to be tapped absolutely dead straight using a 7/16-14 tap.
The old fashioned umbrella-type seals are fine for something like a stock 260 engine but they are not suitable for a performance engine. Both Teflon and Viton seals require the valve guides to be machined before installation.
I strongly recommend that you buy Tom Monroe's definitive work on the SBF engine and slowly digest the information contained therein:

Every time I go for a Tiger info paddle, I quickly get out of my depth.
I think there should be a Required reading list for noobs like me.
