BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS
The Brighton Speed Trials was the idea of local man Sir Harry Preston and first took place in 1905 along the seafront on Madeira Road. This road had recently been resurfaced with a new product called Tarmac and was considered by some to be ideal for speed testing cars and motorcycles. This event still runs along the same road, now known as Madeira Drive, and today is the oldest car race run in Britain. The 1932 event attracted a huge crowd of over 100,000 and the star of the day was Sir Malcolm Campbell in his supercharged Sunbeam Tiger. He reached 120 miles per hour over the ½ mile course, not bad for 1932. The Brighton Speed Trials has been a stomping ground for Sunbeam Tigers ever since. In 1965 Alan Fraser entered a Tiger and went up the kilometre in only 25.31 seconds with a terminal speed of 123 m.p.h. Nobody ever bettered that in a Tiger over the km. Martin Pester. |
Between 1965 and 2001 some 77 Sunbeam Tigers entered the trials. BEST TIMES TO DATE FOR A SUNBEAM TIGER:
I'll be there again in 2002 trying to beat Sean's time. Come and have a go. It's happening on Saturday 14th September. It's a great day out whether you compete or spectate and the 200 cars and 50 bikes entered every year are as rare, fast and special as you will see almost anywhere. So far 4 STOC Tigers have entered, including Chris Beighton with his race Tiger, and once 6 have signed up a Cup will be put up as an award to the quickest Tiger!
